O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm about the performance. O'Neil received high praise by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
